Nelson était borgne et lorsque ses officiers l'informèrent que des navires de guerre danois approchaient, il aurait levé sa lunette vers son mauvais oeil et aurait déclaré I see no ships ("je ne vois aucun navire"), donnant ainsi l'occasion à la flotte anglaise d'engager le combat, et de le gagner. Aujourd'hui, on utilise cette expression en allusion à Nelson lorsque quelqu'un fait exprès de ne pas remarquer quelque chose. -
